Punjab forms law reforms committee to update archaic criminal laws

The committee will submit recommendations to make old criminal laws modern and effective. It will also draft amendments to the Criminal Code of 1898, the Pakistan Penal Code 1860, and the Qanun-e-Shahadat Order 1984.
The Law Reforms Committee will draft a “National Security Law”. Legal reforms related to the prevention of crimes, effective enforcement of law and restoration of public order will be introduced.
Amendments will be proposed in the laws especially regarding the protection of women and children in Punjab. The committee will also propose amendments to the laws related to counter-terrorism, cybercrime, cyber security and inter-provincial coordination.
The Law Reforms Committee will propose amendments in line with modern scientific techniques, laws and social requirements.
DIG Kamran Adil will head the committee, while Additional Secretary (Judicial) Home Department Imran Hussain Ranjha will be the Committee Secretary.
The Law Reforms Committee will submit its report to the Home Department within three months. The Punjab Home Department has issued a notification of the Law Reforms Committee as well.
