Pakistan activates 911 emergency helpline for all urgent situations
The initiative is designed to provide immediate assistance to citizens facing natural disasters and other urgent situations.
According to the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the 911 helpline is capable of operating in areas with damaged or inactive mobile network towers.
The system automatically connects to the nearest operational tower, regardless of the service provider, ensuring uninterrupted access to emergency services.
A ministry spokesperson said, “Citizens affected by floods or other emergencies can dial 911 to receive prompt assistance.
We also urge people to avoid unnecessary calls so that those in need can get help without delay.”
The 911 helpline is part of the Pakistan Emergency Helpline (PEHL) initiative, which integrates services such as police, fire brigade, health assistance, and disaster relief under one system.
Originally launched in 2022, the system has now been reactivated and expanded to address the current crisis and ensure timely emergency response.
The Ministry emphasized that the service plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety and effective emergency management during disasters.
It also serves as a data acquisition device to assess resource needs and monitor incident trends across regions.
Earlier, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Friday reported that cloud bursts and flash floods over the past 24 hours have claimed 229 lives and injured 40 people across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the PDMA, the fatalities include 184 men, 14 women and 12 children, while the injured comprise 17 men, 3 women, and one child.
District-wise figures show 91 deaths in Buner, 35 in Shangla, 23 in Mansehra, 21 in Bajaur, 20 in Swat, 15 in Battagram, and five in Lower Dir.
