An unusually sharp increase in cold weather is expected across the country
An unusually sharp increase in cold weather is expected across the country over the next few days as a severe cold wave is set to grip most parts of the country.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), temperatures are likely to drop significantly across all four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and other upper regions, intensifying the cold spell.

In its alert, the NDMA said extreme cold conditions persisted in Gilgit-Baltistan, while freezing weather is also expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Balochistan and the Potohar region.

It warned that temperatures could fall further in Quetta, Ziarat and Kalat in the coming days, raising the risk of respiratory illnesses and potential damage to crops.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said fog intensity may increase in the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh, which could disrupt daily life and traffic movement.

Colder conditions in Karachi

Karachi residents have also been advised to prepare for colder conditions.

The PMD said cold northeasterly winds are blowing in the city, and the minimum temperature could drop to between 10 and 11 degrees Celsius from Thursday night.

Temperatures are likely to fall into the single digits on Saturday and Sunday nights, with the minimum possibly reaching 9 degrees Celsius.

According to recorded minimum temperatures across the country, Leh remained the coldest area on Wednesday with a minimum of minus 11 degrees Celsius.

Ziarat recorded minus 9 degrees, Astore minus 8, while Kalat and Kalam saw temperatures fall to minus 7 degrees Celsius.

Skardu recorded minus 6 degrees, Gupis minus 5, and Hunza, Malam Jabba, Parachinar, Quetta and Nathia Gali recorded minus 4 degrees Celsius.

The NDMA and the Meteorological Department have advised citizens to take precautionary measures, wear warm clothing and take special care of the elderly, children and those with health conditions to avoid the adverse effects of severe cold.
