Pakistan Showcases Forest Restoration Success at COP30

At COP30, Pakistan showcased its progress in forest restoration and climate resilience during a side event titled “Upscaling the Green Pakistan Programme (UGPP): A Success Story.” Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, highlighted the country’s efforts to revive degraded landscapes, expand forest cover, and implement nature-based solutions for climate adaptation.

In a special video address, Dr. Malik emphasized the role of forests as the planet’s most efficient natural infrastructure for carbon sequestration. “Carbon sequestration requires factories that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. That factory is a tree,” he said.

The minister outlined Pakistan’s achievements under UGPP, noting that billions of trees have been planted, transforming barren lands into functioning ecosystems. He stressed that the programme is community-driven, engaging local populations in protecting and managing forests, enhancing climate awareness, and building resilience.

A documentary produced by the Ministry showcased field progress, community stories, and ecological improvements under the programme. The session concluded with a panel discussion featuring national and international experts, highlighting the global significance of forest restoration in biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, and livelihood resilience.

Dr. Malik reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to global climate action, stating, “We stand with our forests and with all the forests of the world because we stand with the climate, and we are determined to protect it.”

Through UGPP, Pakistan continues to demonstrate that restoration-led climate resilience is not only achievable but essential for a sustainable future.
